I was using Thunderbird 0.8 on Windows XP Professional. I receive many emails from Japan with malicious attachments. Thunderbird is good automatically detecting the Junk. I NEVER open the attachments.

I was running Symantec Anti-virus with auto-protect and email scan. Starting one month ago, my Inbox file became 0bytes long during the download of the messages from the server. I found the file was not quarantined by Symantec AV. I disabled Symantec, and soon the Inbox disappeared again and third time.

I stopped using Thunderbird for a while. Today, I uninstalled the old Thunderbird and erased the Profile in my Application Settings. I installed Thunderbird 1.5 Beta 1, created a new account and downloaded my mail. After creating some filters I started marking some messages as Junk. Note: The Anti-Virus program is not running! After I marked a certain email as Junk, my Inbox became 0bytes long.

WARNING! It seems an attachment is erasing my Inbox without execution!

If you have any experience with this sort of problem, or can recommend a more secure Email program, please respond.

I would love to continue to use Thunderbird, but it may be too dangerous.

Thanks,
Andrew

Hrm... I started swapping back to Outlook Express and the little sucker has already pissed me off enough to make me think again about using Thunderbird.

I guess I could setup a gmail account for each address, forward all my mails to the right addresses, and then just download each account via pop3 using the corresponding gmail account.

That way I could leave stuff on the server indefinately, so I'd have web access, pop3 access and spam filtering all in one. Ok, so I think I'm gonna try set it up. If I get it working I'll post an entry about it...

It's called gmail. ;-)
And with their pop3 access, and the fact that you can leave the mail on their server for backup purposes, it's lovely to use...

With some clever filtering on your and gmail's side, you could filter your work mail through gmail too. :-) I don't do that though, Thunderbird's never lost my Inbox. Must be because I don't run it on Windows? ;)
